By dividing the cells, the power generated per cell is halved and the resistance losses at the cell and module level are reduced to a quarter. Furthermore, the halved current can significantly reduce the temperature in the cells and thus reduce the risk of hot spot effects. The three small junction boxes, each equipped with a single bypass diode, also transfer less heat to the cells below. These factors also increase the longevity of the overall system and splitting the module in half will also have an impact on the overall performance. The path of the generated current is shortened by dividing the module, further reducing resistance losses. Vertical mounting of the module will also prove beneficial in shaded situations. For example, if the lower half of the module is shaded, users can still generate 50% performance with the upper half, while production of a complete cell module stops completely. This could be the case with inter-row shading for installations in free field or on pitched roofs. With half-cell modules, therefore, it is possible to obtain higher power classes and higher efficiencies per system.
